Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China, in the northwest of the country.

Located in a green oasis between the lofty ice-capped Bogda Peak, the vast Salt Lake in the east, the rolling pine-covered Southern hill and the alternating fields and sand dunes of Zunggar Basin in the northwest, Urumqi has an average elevation of 800 meters. The largest city in the western half of China.

has 2,081,834 inhabitants with a population density of 174.53 inhabitants/km². Of these, 75.3% are Han Chinese, 12.8% are Uyghurs, 8.0% are Hui and 2.3% are Kazakhs and Kyrgyz.

Transportation:

More than 30 airlines connect urumqi to the outside world, with daily flights to and from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xi’an. The direct daily flights to and from Lhasa now is available and the whole flight lasts only 3.5 hours. Flights to major cities like Tianjin,Chengdu, Chongqing, Nanjing, Kunming, Hangzhou, Taiyuan, Jinan, Changsha, Haikou, Wuhan, Wenzhou, Xiamen, Zhuhai, Shenyang and international and regional flights to Okinawa, Singapore, and Hong Kong are also available from Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport.

There are altogether 45 daily rail departures from Urumqi, connecting Urumqi to other cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Qingdao, Jinan, Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou, Guangzhou, Changsha, Wuhan, Chengdu, Xian, Xining, Urumqi and Hohhot.

Urumqi is the hub of the road transportation system in Xinjian Province with Urumqi East Bus Station and Urumqi West Bus Station being the two largest. There are 750 buses to different places daily and the destinations are as far flung as Gansu, Baotou, Xining, Zhengzhou, Chengdu and Wenzhou.

Where to go

Xinjiang Provincial Museum opens a marvelous world for you. Colored pottery depicting flowers, powerful and simple wood carvings from the Han Dynasty, exquisite Buddhist sculptures, relics left by the Great Wall and the Silk Road, all of which have vivid ethnic features, are displayed. Particularly, the colorful pottery is worth seeing as Gansu is the hometown of colorful pottery, where the oldest colored pottery in China was found.

Heavenly lake and Southern Passture are the most popular scenic spots in Urumqi .

Carpet

Xinjiang Carpets and Rugs are famous for their exquisite craftsmanship and brilliant artistic style. The design and color vividly reflect both national and regional features. They are all woven manually by the Uygur people, and are generally made of wool.

Atlas Silk

Atlas is a kind of silk fabric with fine intricate patterns that Uygur women like very much, and is renowned for its multiple and resplendent colors. Usually the colors include sharp contrasts such as viridis, sapphire, indigo, yellow, peach, orange, gold, mauve, black, white, etc. The patterns are well-knit and lifelike, representing the light and color of nature. Atlas silk is soft, flexible, beautiful in patterns and excellent in quality. It is used by the local people not only for costuming but also as an interior ornament.

There are hundreds of species of grapes, muskmelons, watermelons, apples, pears, apricots, peaches, pomegranates, cherries, figs, and walnuts, and large quantities of fruits and melons are transported to other parts of the country and abroad. To buy fruits and melons, you can simply go to the supermarkets or you can choose to go to a local agriculture market.

Urumqi people enjoy many tastes including salty, fresh, tart, and spicy. Gansu cuisine can be sampled at various hotels in Urumqi. Typical dishes include Pola, Noodle (Lagman) , Kebab and veroius dumpleings .
