| Suzhou is located in a subtropical monsoon zone, so the weather is mild and moist with four distinct seasons. It’s best to visit Suzhou between January and April because the temperature is not too low and the flowers are in full bloom until June. The Plum Rain Season of June is followed by a hot July. After July, a harvest autumn arrives. Both the fresh fruits and the seafood will surely whet your appetite. |

By Air Despite being an important tourist destination, Suzhou does not have its own international airport at present. By Train Almost all the trains running on the Hu-Ning (Shanghai-Nanjing) Railway stop at the Suzhou Railway Station. By Long-distance Bus Suzhou is known as the ‘Southeast Gate’ to Shanghai and Zhejiang Province because of its well-developed highway network.

What to Buy Suzhou silk and embroidery have a long history and their current fashions have a covetous buying public; silk underwear is a wonderful and relatively inexpensive luxury for visitors. Other must-buys include sandalwood folding fans for women, calligraphic art, and paintings. Local arts and crafts include jade carvings, wood-cut New Year pictures, round silk fans, and furniture.

| Taihu Lake Silver Fish
Emerald hairpin in shape and ivory in color, the silver fish in the Taihu Lake has soft bone and no scale. Its flesh is tender and taste is dainty which Japanese calls “Fish Ginseng” due to its nutrition. |
